The 2012 Malta Budget introduced a number of measures to increase investment and encourage growth in the gaming industry in Malta. The Maltese Government’s intention was to strengthen the digital gaming industry and this can be witnessed via the establishment of the Malta Games Fund and by the introduction of a tax credit scheme.
The Government announced the setting up of a Malta Games Fund for the promotion of this sector through the allocation of a €150,000 investment in projects related to digital games. This fund would help the development and expansion of the local gaming industry and subsequently attract more professionals in this sector to consider working in Malta.
Tax credits will be offered to Maltese companies which commission educational or promotional digital games. A tax credit scheme which is aimed at assisting these local companies will be granting a tax credit up to a maximum of €15,000.
In order to attract more international professionals in the digital gaming industry to Malta, including game directors and game designers, the Government will be allocating an advantageous 15% income tax scheme as a flat rate to experts in this field. This flat rate of taxation will also be available for academics and researches in this sector.
