The EU Social Security Regulations (883/2004/EC), which came into force on 1 May 2010, have been extended by modernised coordination to cover Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein as of 1 June 2012. This is part of an ongoing process to further remove obstacles to freedom of movement throughout the EU. 

Two regulations adopted in 1971 and 1972 have been governing the regime applicable to employees and other categories of persons residing lawfully inthe territory of a member state.
