Between the 1st and 28th March, 2012, Harrods will be flying the Maltese flag. Coincidentally this shall also coincide with the 70th anniversary of Malta being awarded the George Cross in 1942 for the “heroism and devotion of its people” during World War II.
This unique and exclusive event is being organised by the Malta High Commission in the UK, together with the Malta Tourism Authority, Malta Enterprise and FinanceMalta.
Malta’s High Commissioner to the UK, Joseph Zammit Tabona and Tourism Minister, Mario de Marco, explained that the exhibition would help promote Malta in a “different and innovative way”. Indeed, Finance Minister, Tonio Fenech, argued that the exhibition is not simply about tourism but guaranteed that this initiative would serve as “strong investment platform”.
Harrods Director of Media Sales, Guy Cheston, said that “Harrods is delighted to be hosting such an inventive, exciting and visually appealing promotion. The luxury institution is an excellent platform to showcase the diversity of what Malta has to offer to desirable, elite and often hard to reach customers from the UK and beyond”.
Throughout the department store, which is the largest in the UK, patrons and visitors will be exposed to the beauties that Malta has to offer from its traditional delights to its modern pleasures. The Malta-themed exhibition will display a stunning collection of Maltese photography and artwork by 30 Maltese artists, featuring paintings by Malta's well known artist Kenneth Zammit Tabona, with proceeds donated to the Duke of Edinburgh charity. Mdina blown glass and Maltese antique silver will also be on display. A sunken galleon full of “Maltese treasures” and artefacts will greet the 1.2 million monthly visitors at Harrods as they enter the store and this will be exhibited across five of the store’s shop windows.
Furthermore, the till receipts issued by the store in this month (about one million) will depict adverts of Malta and Gozo. Moreover, the Harrods monthly magazine, which has a circulation of around 105,000, will also have a special Malta supplement and will give readers a taste of the Mediterranean.
Apart from promoting tourism, the exhibition will also have an area dedicated to hosting business meetings.
Tonio Fenech explained that the idea of this promotion was to change people’s perception of Malta and revitalise Malta’s image among the UK market. “Many investors simply think of Malta as a sun and sea destination. This initiative, which marries tourism and investment promotion, seeks to promote Malta in a more holistic manner.”
