Setting the Scene

This interview was conducted live and recorded as part of the AILA Global Migration Section spotlight series. Flavia Santos Lloyd, a US-based immigration lawyer and the Founder and Managing Partner of Santos Lloyd Law Firm, P.C., invited Jean-Philippe to introduce himself to the community and answer a set of quick, personal questions – less about technical law, and more about what makes the lawyer tick.

Who is Jean-Philippe Chetcuti?

Jean-Philippe Chetcuti is Managing Partner and co-founder of Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates, a full-service law firm based in Malta. A senior private client lawyer, he specialises in global citizenship and European residency programmes, Maltese Citizenship by Merit, family office structuring, international tax, trusts, and estate planning, advising ultra-HNW individuals, their family offices, and the advisers who support them.

He has co-headed the firm’s Malta residency and citizenship practice and Private Client Tax practice since 2002, and has served as Chairman of the Malta Branch of STEP, alongside acting as the AILA international associate representing Malta.

In thought leadership, Chetcuti is the author of The Dual Citizenship Report (global, European, and Russia & CIS editions) and a regular contributor to Investment Migration Insider and STEP on citizenship and investment migration matters.

He is also recognised for policy and framework contributions, including being the proponent of the Doctrine of Contributive Belonging, designer of the CCLEX Mobility Assets Spectrum, and a driver behind the enactment of Malta’s Family Business Act (2013).

“What I enjoy most is the human side of the work: immigration changes lives, and every matter carries the story of a family, a timeline, and a future being built across borders.”
Jean-Philippe Chetcuti, AILA GMS Member for Malta

Rapid-fire Questions

[question]Early bird or night owl?[/question]
[answer]Traditionally night owl – but increasingly an early bird. I like waking up with the kids; it’s an opportunity for connection while they get ready for school.[/answer]

[question]Emails or phone calls?[/question]
[answer]I try phone calls – better still – text. Instant... I like to nip it in the bud, and then follow up by email.[/answer]

[question]Big city energy or countryside calm?[/question]
[answer]I like big cities for the energy, especially for work. But for relaxation, it’s certainly the countryside. (I’d also say the seaside, but that might be because I’m Maltese – and I do love the sea.)[/answer]

[question]Networking events or one-on-one meetings?[/question]
[answer]It depends. Networking is great for meeting new people, but the quality meetings happen one-on-one.[/answer]

[question]Big picture or detail-oriented?[/question]
[answer]By far detail-oriented.[/answer]

[question]Office attire or business casual?[/question]
[answer]Business casual. As I grow older, I try to be more casual – and I can get away with it.[/answer]

[question]Reading a book or watching a series?[/question]
[answer]A series – because it makes good quality family time as well. We can combine it: you get to unwind, and at least the whole family is together.[/answer]

[question]Teamwork or solo projects?[/question]
[answer]I thrive in a team. I’m still find myself being very hands-on, even when working in a team, though – and I’ll admit delegating is a challenge. It’s gradual; you need to let go bit by bit.[/answer]

[question]Invest in property or in finance?[/question]
[answer]Certainly property. I understand property more than I do finance.[/answer]

[question]Invest local or global?[/question]
[answer]I like to invest within reach – so local.[/answer]

[question]Laptop or notebook and pen?[/question]
[answer]Easy: laptop. I’m a gadget freak – any device, really.[/answer]

[question]Numbers or storytelling?[/question]
[answer]Storytelling.[/answer]

[question]Travel for work or work from anywhere?[/question]
[answer]I could work from anywhere, but I like to meet in person – and I like working with my team in person. So travel for work.[/answer]

[question]Save first or spend to grow?[/question]
[answer]Spend to grow – we depend on people and on technology nowadays so that's where our investment goes.[/answer]

[question]Innovation in legal tech or traditional lawyering?[/question]
[answer]Legal tech. It’s unavoidable now.[/answer]

[question]Private clients or corporate clients?[/question]
[answer]Predominantly private clients – and most corporates we deal with tend to be family-held.[/answer]

[question]Mentor others or keep learning?[/question]
[answer]A mix – both matter.[/answer]

[question]Flat fees or hourly billing?[/question]
[answer]Flat is easy. We don’t have to have disputes, and I can spend as much time as I want on an issue without worrying about how to charge. We hate thinking about charges – it’s awkward, and we’d rather focus on the work.[/answer]

[question]Niche or diversification?[/question]
[answer]I’d say diversification within the niche. We diversify, but within the immigration and personal tax space.[/answer]

[question]Three items on your bucket list?[/question]
[answer]I really struggled with this one. I had two at first: I want to take my wife on a honeymoon – ours was planned for September 15, and then 9/11 happened. And I’d love to publish another book. If I add a third, it’s to travel for pleasure more than I currently do.[/answer]

About AILA Global Mobility Section

The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is the national association of more than 15,000 attorneys and law professors who practise and teach immigration law.
