Andersen's European Media Summit, Madrid
The European Media Summit is a series of private media meetings organised through the year by the Media industry group of Andersen Global.
This June, the European Media Summit brought together over 30 European tax, legal and regulatory professionals dedicated to the media industry to coordinate and streamline ongoing services for film producers, film platforms and film commissioners on an ongoing basis.
Amongst the guest speakers on Day 2 of this month’s European Media Summit, were the Spanish Film Commissioner, representatives of Groupo Secuoya and of Federation Film Studios who shared the perspectives of the film production industry.
Film incentives in cross-border co-productions
One of the take-home messages was the importance of international collaboration between film commissions worldwide but also between Andersen’s legal and tax advisors around the world as important supporting-actors to the media industry. This enables the industry to combine and take the fullest advantage of film incentives offered by multiple film locations.
“Cross-border partnerships are key to maxing out film incentives internationally through co-production", Patricia Motilla, Parnter, Culture, Sports & Entertainment at Andersen in Spain.
For film producers and film commissioners, updated information on national film incentives of all film locations, together with coordinated local professional advice is critical, hence the importance of Andersen’s global media industry focus.
Malta as a film location
In her address to the delegates, Dr Charlene Mifsud provided an overview of the key advantages of Malta as a film location. The cost effectiveness of hiring locally-available crew, the stable and moderate climate of Malta, versatile film locations as well as English being widely-spoken were some of the main attractions of Malta as a film location. However, foremost in location decisions remains Malta’s generous and efficient cash rebate system that allows for cost reductions of up to 40%.
