Malta launches the Malta Film Fund

Aimed at strengthening its growing film industry, for another year running, Malta has launched the Malta Film Fund, which will grant part-financing to the development and production of local films and documentaries.

EU citizens in their individual capacity or independent EU audiovisual production companies may be eligible for grants by the Malta Film Fund. Qualifying projects receive funding after ranking by merit following an evaluation procedure.

The Fund, originally launched in 2008, will cover up to 60% of development expenses and 50% of production expenses capped at €20,000 and €120,000, respectively.

This fund is part of a chain of incentives accessible for productions in Malta. This includes:

  • Cash rebate financial incentives whereby production companies in Malta may obtain a rebate of up to 22% of the eligible expenditure, which is granted upon completion of filming. The rebate may amount to a maximum of 80% of the production budget.
  • Investment Aid Tax Credits available in respect of expenditure incurred in acquiring or developing tangible and intangible assets in relation to an initial investment project. Companies may be eligible for the tax credit of a maximum of 50% of the investment costs or the wage costs of jobs directly created by the project and maintained for 5 years.
  • Co-production advantages that stem from Malta’s signatory status to the European Convention on Cinematographic Co-production.  As a result of this convention, production companies are eligible for the benefits granted to national films in all the 35 states party to the convention.

Having earned a reputation as a lucrative filming and production spot, over the past four years work on 65 international films was done in Malta
