The trading relationship between Malta and Tunisia has improved considerably in the past three years; imports increased by 41% while exports amounted to €7.8 million in 2011. There have been various business delegations to Tunisia, and last year, a Joint Tuniso-Maltese Business Council was set up.

The Maltese-Tunisian Mixed Commission spearheads the relations between Malta and Tunisia. Issues ranging from transport to commercial links, education, youth, culture and health have been discussed during the Mixed Commission held in Malta in 2011 and action is expected to be taken in relation to these various sectors in 2012. Various experts’ visits are planned both to Malta and Tunisia. Moreover, a cultural working group has been set up under the aegis of the Embassy of Malta in Tunisia. A three-year programme on cultural exchanges between Malta and Tunisia is to be started in 2012.

As regards the educational sector, Malta will be participating in the English Language Village  and will be offering assistance in various educational sectors. The embassy is starting contacts with Maltese Higher Education institutions to examine the possibility of setting up teleconferencing in order to promote the teaching of Maltese as a foreign language.
