His findings highlight that, although the amendments represented significant progress in the acquisition of citizenship through descent, birth, or marriage, further changes are needed to ensure that only individuals with a genuine connection to the Maltese Islands can obtain citizenship. This is in line with the opinion of the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the EU in the Malta Citizenship Case in EC vs Malta, 2024.
