The Malta Association of Family Enterprises (MAFE) is a non-governmental organisation established in 2011 to represent and support family-owned businesses in Malta. Recognising that approximately 75% of Maltese businesses are family-run, MAFE's mission is to advocate for their interests, promote sustainable growth, and facilitate smooth generational transitions. MAFE was co-founded by Chetcuti Cauchi's managing partner Jean-Philippe Chetcuti who served several terms as secretary and president and who was instrumental in the association proposals that led to the enactment of the Malta Family Business Act.

MAFE's Key Activities and Initiatives

  1. Advocacy and Policy Development: MAFE has been instrumental in lobbying for legislation beneficial to family businesses. A notable achievement is its contribution to the development of the Family Business Act, designed to support the continuity of family enterprises and raise awareness about their significance in the economy.
  2. Educational Programs: The association emphasizes the importance of governance and succession planning. It has collaborated with educational institutions to offer certified courses on family business governance, aiming to equip members with the necessary tools to navigate challenges unique to family enterprises.
  3. Seminars and Workshops: MAFE organizes events focused on enhancing governance structures within family businesses. For instance, in October, a seminar titled "Developing the Family Business Governance Structures" was held to guide members in establishing effective governance frameworks.
  4. Networking Events: To foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, MAFE hosts networking events. A recent example is the event "Viewing Succession of Family Businesses Through the Eyes of the Next Generation of Leaders". This gathering featured discussions on effective succession preparation and intergenerational collaboration.
